French Drain Installation Near Harris County, Texas

Two pipes run side by side in a trench

Standing water, a soggy yard and water pooling against a foundation are common problems on Gulf Coast clay. A French drain is a simple, proven fix: a sloped trench with perforated pipe in gravel that collects water and carries it somewhere safe. Brown Aerobic Septic Specialists designs and installs French drains across Harris County and the surrounding counties.

How a French drain works

A trench is dug on a slope, lined with filter fabric, and filled with gravel around a perforated pipe. Water in the soil enters the pipe and flows downhill to a discharge point such as a street, a ditch or a daylight outlet. The fabric keeps soil out of the gravel so the drain stays open.

When a French drain makes sense

  • Water pooling in a low spot or along a fence line.
  • A wet yard that stays soggy for days after rain.
  • Water collecting near a foundation or slab.
  • A wet area near a septic drain field that is keeping the soil saturated.

Important: septic systems and drainage

A French drain has to be laid out carefully around a septic system. Drains should not be routed through or too close to a drain field, and water should not be directed onto it. Because we do both septic and excavation, we plan drainage with your system in mind. See drain field repair.
